Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) "Je suis né à Mulhouse, en Alsace, le 9 octobre 1859. Mon enfance s'écoula doucement sous l'influence bienfaisante de ma mère et de mes sours, d'un père profondément dévoué à ses enfants, sous la touchante protection de frères plus âgés. Ma première impression triste, dont le souvenir douloureux ne s'est jamais effacé de ma mémoire, a été la guerre de 1870. La paix conclue, mon père opta pour la nationalité française ; nous dûmes quitter l'Alsace.
Je me rendis à Paris pour poursuivre mes études. Je fus reçu en 1878 à l'École Polytechnique, d'où je sortis en 1880 pour entrer comme sous-lieutenant élève d'artillerie à l'École d'application de Fontainebleau. Le 1er octobre 1882 j'étais nommé lieutenant au 31e régiment d'artillerie en garnison au Mans. A la fin de l'année 1883, j'étais classé aux batteries à cheval de la 1re division de cavalerie indépendante à Paris. Le 12 septembre 1889, je fus nommé capitaine au 21e régiment d'artillerie, détaché comme adjoint à l'École centrale de pyrotechnie militaire à Bourges.
Dans le courant de l'hiver, je me fiançai à Mlle Lucie Hadamard, qui est devenue ma compagne dévouée et héroïque. Durant mes fiançailles, je préparai mes examens à l'École supérieure de guerre où je fus reçu le 20 avril 1890 ; le lendemain 21 avril, je me mariai. Je sortis de l'École supérieure de guerre en 1892 avec la mention très bien et le brevet d'état-major. Mon numéro de classement à la sortie de l'École de guerre me valut d'être appelé comme stagiaire à l'état-major de l'armée.
J'y entrai le 1er janvier 1893." Alfred Dreyfus, capitaine dans l'armée française, fut accusé et condamné pour haute trahison ; pourtant le dossier était vide si ce n'était un bordereau "douteux", mais il fallait un coupable : Dreyfus, juif alsacien, était tout désigné... Alfred Dreyfus, à partir du journal tenu au bagne et de sa correspondance, témoigne de ses cinq années (1894-1899) de souffrances physique et morale... L'affaire Dreyfus : une affaire qui allait durer 12 ans et diviser la France...
