The dense molecular clouds where stars form typically have a rich chemical composition. Hence, the CR ionization rate within molecular clouds must be inferred by some other method such as measuring the abundance of H3+ atoms in MCs. Researchers have for the first time captured atomic-scale images of molecules before and after a chemical reaction--a breakthrough that will help. This course discusses the fundamental aspects of atomic and molecular spectra that enable one to infer physical conditions in astronomical, planetary and terrestrial environments from the analysis of their electromagnetic radiation. The four-atom molecule of formaldehyde, the gas phase spectrum of which is shown below, provides an example of these terms. We expect six fundamental vibrations (12 minus 6), and these have been assigned to the spectrum absorptions. When a CR They obtain multiple infrared absorption line spectra of H3+and 13CO, to trace the dense molecular gas, for two regions in the Central cluster with the Cryogenic Infrared Echelle Spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope in Chile. Molecules are made up of many different atoms, and those atoms crowd close to each other in ways that make one atom interfere with the normal spectrum of another. €�You have to deduce that by taking nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared or ultraviolet spectra. It is more like a puzzle, putting all the information together and then nailing down what the structure likely is.
